Nick Barborak has served as Treasurer of Columbiana County since January 2007. He lives in Lisbon with his wife Brandy, their two daughters, Audrey and Abigail and their two dogs.
Nick was born and raised in Columbiana County. Growing up in a steelworker’s home, Nick learned the value of hard work at an early age. He graduated from Lisbon David Anderson High School in 1993 Magna Cum Laude. He later studied at Kent State University, where he graduated Magnaum Laude with a degree in Political Science. While at Kent, he was inducted into the Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society. He held a position as a teaching assistant in a course entitled American National Government. He served on the Board of Directors for the Community Service Counsel. He volunteered at various charitable organizations. During his junior year, he was named the Shirley Robb-Dubetz Law Scholar.
During his course of study, Nick served as an intern in the United States House of Representatives. There, he assisted in drafting speeches, providing direct assistance to constituents with governmental concerns, researched various topics for his congressman and assisted in preparing legislation.
He later accepted a scholarship to the University of Akron School of Law, where he graduated Cum Laude with a Juris Doctor degree. He served on the Akron Law Review, where his work focused primarily on labor and employment issues. His article on charitable fraud was selected for publication and has since been cited in a brief before the United States Supreme Court.
Upon graduation, Nick accepted a position as a law clerk to the Seventh District Court of Appeals. He later served as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Columbiana County. He is a founding partner of Barborak Law Offices in Lisbon.
In 2007, Nick was appointed to serve as Columbiana County’s Treasurer. He was elected to that office in 2008 with nearly 60% of the vote. Nick is now a candidate for the Ohio House of Representatives in the 5th House District. The District consists exclusively of Columbiana County.
Nick is Vice President of the Lisbon Community Foundation. He is a member of the County Treasurer’s Association of Ohio, the NAACP, the Columbiana County Bar Association, the Columbiana County Historical Society, the County Township Association, and the County Farm Bureau.
Having been raised in a union family and now married to an active Ohio Education Association member, Nick realizes the importance of workers sticking together to bargain for the terms and conditions of employment. Nick spoke out against Senate Bill 5 and worked nightly, canvassing neighborhoods to defeat Issue 2.
